Man dies at WA mining site

Police are compiling a report for the coroner following the death of a man at a mining site in Western Australia's north.

The man died at a mine site owned by Fortescue Metal's Group about 4:00pm AWDT yesterday.

It is understood he was a builder for the company United Constructions, which is building a mine 150 kilometres north of Newman.

Newman police spent the night at the mine site investigating the death, but are yet to say how the man died.

WorkSafe Commissioner Nina Lyhne says an investigator was sent to the site late yesterday.

"We were advised yesterday that there had been a fatality at an FMG site in the Pilbara," she said.

"We sent a WorkSafe inspector to the site last night and we haven't heard anything from that person.

"Obviously it's an isolated site and we'll be conducting a thorough investigation."
